Your Steps towards a Healthier Heart
What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?
Cardiac Rehabilitation is an individualized program of exercise, health and wellness education and lifestyle counseling designed to help you live a healthier life. Our program is designed to support those who have a history of heart conditions such as angina or, have experienced a myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass surgery, valve replacement or any other cardiac-related surgery. We can also assist individuals living with multiple risk factors for developing heart disease such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity, as well as those with a family history of heart disease who want to take a pro-active approach to their wellness.
What to expect during your Cardiac Rehabilitation program:
· An in-depth health assessment, including review of present risk factors for heart disease and discussion of current lifestyle habits; heart rate, blood pressure, BMI and bodyfat levels will be measured
· Review of your Medical Exercise Prescription from your cardiologist, and any restrictions and guidelines that have been determined necessary prior to starting your program
· An exercise-readiness assessment, including fitness history, activity preferences, realistic and attainable goals as well as a functional movement analysis to determine muscle imbalances and joint flexibility limitations
· A modified cardiovascular exercise test to determine appropriate prescription range for your program; education on how to monitor exercise intensity using heart rate and RPE scale
· Monitoring of blood pressure and heart rate during exercise sessions; monitoring of weight, BMI and body composition as required
· Education on the importance of long warm-up and cool-down periods, with a progressive interval training approach to improving cardiac function; program is modified every 2 weeks or as needed – you always have a choice in how comfortably you wish to exercise
· Resistance training after 6 weeks of cardiovascular training, or earlier, as prescribed by your Cardiologist; programming is designed to fit your needs with a variety of equipment utilized
· Education and counseling about heart disease, stress management, lifestyle choices and healthy eating - a Nutritional Consultation will be included as part of your program
· Follow-up sessions for 6 months or longer; our goal is to provide you and your family with the support that you need as you continue your journey towards improving the quality of your life
About our Program
Our cardiac rehabilitation program is open to all individuals who are concerned about their heart health, and have been referred by their cardiologist or heart specialist. We follow the criteria set out by the Ottawa Heart Institute for safe and effective exercise prescription, and have emergency protocols in place should it be required. We serve a wide range of needs and can provide effective exercise programming for those new to fitness or those who have been active for many years and are looking to resume their fitness lifestyle. As we are a mobile service, we come to you with the option of programming in your home or at the fitness facility of your choice.
